The cost of caring for those with Alzheimer's and other dementia's totals was about $214 billion in 2014. Nearly one in every three seniors who dies each year has Alzheimer's or another dementia. HAPPY NEW YEAR!
We are excited to ring in 2015 with our ongoing commitment providing safe and quality care, and this year announce earning The Joint Commission's Gold Seal of ApprovalĀ® for Home Care Accreditation!
HONOLULU (January 2, 2015) - Attention Plus Care today announced that it has earned The Joint Commission's Gold Seal of ApprovalĀ® for Home Care Accreditation by demonstrating continuous compliance with its performance standards. The Gold Seal of ApprovalĀ® is a symbol of quality that reflects an organization's commitment to providing safe and effective care.
Attention Plus Care underwent a rigorous on-site survey in November 5, 2014. During the survey, compliance with home care standards reflecting key organization areas was evaluated, including the provision of care, treatment and services, emergency management, human resources, individual rights and responsibilities, and leadership. "When individuals engage a home care provider they want to be sure that provider is capable of providing safe, quality care," said Margherita Labson, RN, M.S., executive director, Home Care Accreditation program, The Joint Commission. "As the home care setting becomes increasingly popular, it is important that home care providers are able to demonstrate that they are capable of providing safe, high quality care. Accreditation by The Joint Commission and the gold seal serve as an indication that the organization has demonstrated compliance to these recognized standards of safe and quality care."
"We are very pleased to receive accreditation from The Joint Commission, and having maintained this distinction since 1993. "That is a long time for any organization, and especially important for health care providers in Hawaii." added Wesley Chang, Chief Administrative Officer of Attention Plus Care. The Joint Commission's home care standards are developed in consultation with health care experts, providers and researchers, as well as industry experts, purchasers and consumers. The standards are informed by scientific literature and expert consensus to help organizations measure, assess and improve performance. "Chances are the hospital you rely on in Hawaii is Joint Commission accredited." said Chang.
Founded in 1951, The Joint Commission seeks to continuously improve health care for the public, in collaboration with other stakeholders, by evaluating health care organizations and inspiring them to excel in providing safe and effective care of the highest quality and value. The Joint Commission accredits and certifies more than 20,500 health care organizations and programs in the United States, including hospitals and health care organizations that provide ambulatory and office-based surgery, behavioral health, home care, laboratory and nursing home services.
For over 30 years Attention Plus Care has provided high quality care to thousands of clients, in the comfort and safety of their own home. Attention Plus Care offers affordable home care solutions to clients, and respite for family caregivers, to meet a full range of personal care and nursing services. October 10 2014
Honolulu (October 28, 2014) Our islands are vulnerable to natural disasters and emergencies can happen at anytime. When a major disaster occurs, our community and family's lives can change in an instant. When natural disasters, such as floods, fires, earthquakes, hurricanes, and tsunamis strike, they affect thousands of people every year. In support of our Kupuna, Attention Plus Care will host a free Emergency Preparedness Seminar, themed "Are You Prepared" at the Moiliili Senior Center from 8:30am-10:30am. Attendees will learn more about the risks for emergencies and disasters, safety tips and steps on how to be prepared.
There will also be a special presentation by Wendy Gibson from the American Red Cross, Hawaii Chapter. Wendy will share important steps seniors can take to better prepare and protect themselves in their homes from such threats. The Red Cross in Hawaii prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors. They teach lifesaving skills, helping people prevent and prepare for emergencies.
Jerray Braceros-Inofinada, RN and Client Service Supervisor for Attention Plus will lead the seminar. "Emergencies and disasters can strike quickly and without warning and can force our Kupuna to evacuate their neighborhood or be confined to their homes. This seminar equips our seniors with practical and important tools needed to protect themselves and cope with disaster by planning ahead. Even with physical limitations our seniors can still be prepared" said Braceros-Inofinada.

National Falls Awareness Day on September 23, 2014
HONOLULU (September 19, 2014) - Falls are a serious health risk to our seniors and are the leading cause of injury related death among older adults. They are also the most common cause of nonfatal injuries seen in emergency departments. In support of our Kupuna, and in observance of National Falls Awareness Day on September 23, 2014 Attention Plus Care will host a free Falls Prevention Seminar at the Moiliili Senior Center from 8:30am - 10:30am. Attendees will learn more about the risks for falls, simple prevention, and safety to support more independence.
There will also be a special appearance by Senator Brickwood Galuteria, host of Kupuna Power, an Olelo program that focuses on issues important to our senior community, and Kupuna Power Day at the State Capitol, which seeks to empower seniors with information.
Eileen Phillips, RN and Client Service Director for Attention Plus Care will lead the seminar. "Those of us working with this population in Hawaii know they are at risk for falls. Two factors make this a huge issue for Hawaii's future - longer life spans and aging baby boomers. As our Kupuna age in place, their risk of falling and potential for serious injury increases. We are hoping to get this message out to everyone who attends this seminar" said Phillips.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, falls among adults 65 and over are not only common, but death rates have risen sharply over the last decade. The CDC reports one-in-three older adults will sustain a fall that can lead to a serious injury, and even death. Even falls with minor injuries can seriously affect the quality of life for seniors by inducing fear of falling, which can lead to social isolation and depression. Data shows that in 2011, Hawaii averaged 1,990 hospitalizations each year due to falls, and over 5,770 emergency room visits.
Falls Prevention is one of many classes presented under Aging in Hawaii, an educational outreach program sponsored by Attention Plus Care. Classes are free and lead by a licensed nurse covering a wide variety of topics each month.
